Weekly Devotional
I wasn't able to tear myself away from the TV last night as breaking news of a dramatic rescue was announced: 15 hostages released in Columbia after more than five years in captivity!
In a secret operation, the Columbian military posed as guerilla commanders in order to deceive the rebel group and provide a way for the long awaited release of the hostages the rebels had kidnapped. The Columbian Special Forces infiltrated the insurgents and convinced the rebels to transfer the captives to another location. The captives loaded the helicopter, believing they were being transferred to another secret location for more time in imprisonment. They were totally unaware of the miracle about to take place.
To their amazement, as the helicopter lifted from the ground, the Columbian military disarmed the rebels! One of them declared to the hostages, "We are the national army and you are all free!" What an overwhelming sense of relief and elation they must have felt being freed from bondage to live a brand new life away from their captors!
The Bible says living for Jesus can also bring great spiritual freedom. Romans 7:6 says, "But now that we're no longer shackled to that domineering mate of sin, and out from under all those oppressive regulations and fine print, we're free to live a new life in the freedom of God." Thousands of years go, Jesus carried out the ultimate perfect rescue operation! He also disguised himself, coming to earth as a man, in order to save people from their spiritual captivity.
